Expert Soldier Piling & Shoring Engineering
Advanced deep excavation earth retention, slope stabilization, and zero-lot-line shoring design for complex commercial and residential builds.
What is Soldier Piling?
Soldier piling (frequently combined with lagging) is an advanced structural earth retention system utilized in deep excavations and severe slope stabilization. It involves drilling wide-flange structural steel H-beams (the “soldiers”) deep into the earth at regular intervals, anchoring them in high-strength concrete. As the site is excavated downward, horizontal lagging elements (wood, concrete, or steel) are inserted between the flanges. This robust structural framework resists massive active lateral earth pressures, making it critical for subterranean construction, zero-lot-line basements, and landslide mitigation.

Hillside Slope Stabilization: Anchoring failing canyon slopes and creating secure, multi-tiered buildable pads within strict Baseline Hillside Ordinance (BHO) zones.
Infrastructure & Trenching Support: Providing rigid temporary or permanent structural support for massive civil utility excavations, transit lines, or highway retaining walls.
How We Engineer Soldier Pile Walls
- Geotechnical Data Extraction: We deeply analyze the site’s soils report to determine active earth pressures, friction angles, surcharge loads, and bedrock depths.
- Structural Beam & Embedment Sizing: Calculating the required steel section modulus (beam size) and the exact depth the pile must penetrate below the excavation line to resist overturning.
- Deflection Modeling: Running lateral deflection simulations to ensure the shoring wall will not flex under pressure and damage adjacent private properties or public streets.
- Shoring Plan Submittal: Delivering stamped, comprehensive structural shoring drawings to municipal building departments for immediate excavation clearance.
Navigating Compliance & Regulatory Codes
Southern California municipalities heavily regulate deep excavations to prevent catastrophic cave-ins and property damage. Any cut deeper than 5 feet typically requires fully engineered shoring plans. We design strictly to the California Building Code (CBC), Cal/OSHA excavation safety standards, and rigorous local mandates (such as the LADBS Grading and Shoring Division rules). We ensure all tie-back easements, deflection limits, and safety factors are legally compliant and verified.
Soldier Piling & Shoring FAQ
When is a soldier pile wall preferred over a standard retaining wall?
Soldier piling is essential when excavating deep cuts where there isn’t enough physical space to slope the dirt back safely (like digging a basement right on a property line), or when stabilizing active landslides where massive, deep-rooted structural strength is required.
What is “lagging” in a soldier pile system?
Lagging refers to the horizontal panels—usually heavy pressure-treated timber or reinforced precast concrete—that are slipped between the vertical steel beams to physically hold back the exposed dirt as the excavation goes deeper.
Are soldier pile walls temporary or permanent?
They can be both. They are frequently used as temporary shoring to hold dirt back while a permanent concrete basement wall is poured inside the pit. However, they can also be faced with shotcrete or architectural concrete to serve as highly durable, permanent retaining walls.
Integrated Engineering Solutions
Because deep shoring walls intersect directly with civil grading plans and subterranean utilities, engineering them in a vacuum is dangerous. The Eden Group unifies our structural soldier pile designs with our in-house Civil Engineering teams. We run 3D clash detection to ensure that deep drilled piers do not hit public utility mains, and that the shoring limits perfectly match the precise grading footprint, preventing disastrous and costly mid-excavation redesigns.
